Minor Shirk Sins Like Riya' and Ujub Are Not Forgiven?
Minor Shirk Sins Like Riya' and Ujub Are Not Forgiven?
Bismillah.
Allah Ta'ala says in surah An-Nisa verse 48,
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡsp
"Surely Allah will not forgive (sins) for associating partners with Him (shirk), and He forgives what (sins) other than (shirk) for whoever He wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah, then indeed, he has committed a great sin."
Does this verse apply only to major shirk or to minor shirk?
There was a heated discussion among the scholars, whether minor shirk would not be forgiven by Allah Ta'ala based on the textual or explicit verses above.
The first opinion: the sins of minor shirk are those that Allah Ta'ala will not forgive if they are brought to death and have not had time to repent.
The reason is because verse 48 of Surah An-Nisa above contains a general pronunciation, thus generalizing the law described. That is, the shirk referred to in the verse includes major shirk and minor shirk, such as riya', 'ujub, swearing other than in the name of Allah, and the like.
In addition, the pronunciation of أن يشرك به (to do shirk) in Arabic is called masdar mu'awwal, so the meaning is إشراكا به. While masdar mu'awwal in Arabic rules contains a general meaning, namely all forms of shirk, both big and small shirk.
Among the scholars who hold this opinion are Sheikh Muhammad bin Sholih Al-'Utsaimin Rahimahullah in Al-Qoulul Mufid (1: 111) and also Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz Rahimahullah on his official website binbaz.org.
The second opinion: the position of minor shirk is like other immoral acts. Surah An-Nisa verse 48 above does not cover minor shirk sins. This verse only applies to major shirk sins as unforgivable sins if one does not repent until death. As for minor shirk sins, there is the potential to be forgiven by Allah Ta'ala in the afterlife. In the language of the ahlusunah creed it is called "the throne of masyi'atillah" (depending on God's will). That is, a person who dies carries minor shirk sins, such as riya', sum'ah, and others that he has not repented of, then his fate in the afterlife is according to the will of Allah Ta'ala. If Allah Ta'ala wills to directly forgive, then the sin will be forgiven. If Allah wants to punish him first, then he will be punished first.
The reason is concluding that verse 48 of Surah An-Nisa includes minor shirk, consequently the verses that mention the word shirk also apply to minor shirk, so that the punishment also applies to major shirk, namely: eliminating all good deeds, because you will be eternally in hell, and not God forgives when brought to death.
These verses are
لَئِنۡ أَشۡرَكۡتَ لَيَحۡبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ
“Indeed, if you associate partners with (Allah), your deeds will surely be erased and you will certainly be among the losers.” (QS. Az-Zumar: 65)
إِنَّهُۥ مَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡه\
“Indeed, whoever associates (something with) Allah, then indeed, Allah has forbidden heaven for him, and his place is hell. And there is no helper for those who are unjust." (QS. Al-Ma'idah: 72)
Of course there are no scholars who hold that view.
Among the scholars who hold this opinion is Sheikh Abdurrahman Al-Barrak on his official website sh-albarrak.com.
In the end, there is a scholarly debate about whether minor shirk is not forgiven or not, this shows how dangerous minor shirk is, let alone major shirk. It's time for us to worry and we stay as far away as possible. Wallahu a'lam bisshowab.
