Meaning of Hadith: A believer dies with sweaty forehead
From a friend of Buraidah radhiyallahu 'anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said,
المُؤْمِنُ يَمُوتُ بِعَرَقِ الجَبِينِ
"A believer dies with sweat on his forehead (forehead)." (HR. Tirmidhi no. 982, An-Nasa'i no. 1828, 1829, and Ibn Majah no. 1452. This hadith is considered valid by Al-Albani)
Hadith meaning
What is meant by sweat is water that comes out of the body (body) of a person when he is in pain (exhaustion) and heat. Dying with a sweaty forehead is one of the signs of husnulkhatimah, as mentioned by Sheikh Al-Albani Rahimahullah. (Ahkaamul Janaiz, p. 35)
The meaning of this hadith is explained by the scholars with two explanations:
First, a believer who is very heavy (sick) when dying with the aim of cleansing him of sins and mistakes. So that he also met Allah Ta'ala in a clean condition from sin. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam was in a very difficult condition when he was dying, to the point that he said,
إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ سَكَرَاتٍ
"Actually, death has a sacral (difficult, difficult, or severe condition, pt.)." (Narrated by Bukhari no. 4449)
Narrated by 'Aisyah radhiyallahu' anha's mother,
يُحَذِّرُ مَا صَنَعُوا
"When the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam's illness got worse, he held his clothes, and covered his face. When it feels tight, he removes it from his face. When the situation was like that, he said, 'May the curse of Allah be upon the Jews and Christians, they made the graves of their prophets as mosques.' He warned (the Muslims) for what they were doing." (Narrated by Bukhari no. 435 and Muslim no. 531)
Based on this first meaning, the heavy condition that a believer experiences when he dies is a sign of eliminating sins and also exalting his degree. Syekh Abdullah bin Salih Al-Fauzan hafizhahullah said, "This is a closer meaning." (Minhatul 'Allaam, 4: 238)
Imam Ahmad Rahimahullah narrated an authentic hadith from Buraidah, that he was in Khurasan, then visited his sick brother and he found him dead with sweat on his forehead. Then Buraidah radhiyallahu 'anhu said,
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ. Amen
"Allah is the Greatest. I heard the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam say, 'A believer dies with sweat on his forehead (forehead).' " (HR. Ahmad in Al-Musnad, 38: 129)
This history from Buraidah reinforces the first meaning.
Second, a believer struggles to earn a lawful life until he dies. They are not lazy and do nothing to seek lawful sustenance until death comes. So, based on this second meaning, this hadith contains the motivation to be enthusiastic and strive for halal sustenance until death comes to pick you up. He does not beg people, or leave the business of looking for lawful sustenance, so that he becomes a disease for the people around him. However, a believer will continue to struggle and try to find halal sustenance until death comes to pick him up.
Included in the scope of this second meaning is that a believer when living in the world, they take pains to uphold worship, such as prayer and fasting, and also take pains to implement the rules in religion. Wallahu Ta'ala a'lam.
