Misconceptions about Tawhid
Syaikhul Islam Rahimahullah said, "The monotheism taught by the apostles actually contains a determination of uluhiyah/worship solely to Allah. This is realized by witnessing that no one has the right to be worshiped except Allah. Not to be worshiped, except Him. It is not permissible to be a place to hang your heart (tawakal), except Him. It is not permissible to uphold loyalty, except because of Him. It is not permissible to be hostile, except because of Him. And it is not permissible to do charity, unless it is upright on the teachings of His religion. And this monotheism also contains the obligation to specify the names and attributes (perfection) that He has assigned to Himself.”
He Rahimahullah continued, "And what is meant by monotheism is not merely to include monotheism rububiyah, namely the belief that God alone created nature, as some people from among the experts in theology/philosophy and adherents of tasawwuf believe. They think that if they have succeeded in establishing rububiyah monotheism by bringing strong arguments or evidence, then they have succeeded in establishing the peak of the essence of monotheism. (see Fathul Majid, pp. 15 and 16)
Therefore, do not be surprised if you hear comments from some people, "Tawhid is believed by people" and the like. This happened because they thought monotheism was sufficient by acknowledging that Allah is the only Creator, Ruler and Ruler of the universe. In fact, it is not just monotheism of that kind that Allah Ta'ala ordered them to do.
Syaikhul Islam Rahimahullah said, "Not everyone who believes that Allah is Lord and creator of all things automatically deserves the title of servant (worshipper) of Allah." Why is that? He explained the evidence, “Because actually the Arab polytheists have acknowledged that Allah alone is the creator of everything. Even so, they are still considered as polytheists.” (see Fathul Majid, p. 16)
Sheikh Abdul 'Aziz bin Baz Rahimahullah said, "And this type of monotheism (namely monotheism rububiyah) has been recognized by polytheists who worship idols. Although most of them also oppose the existence of the resurrection day and the gathering of humans (later on the Day of Resurrection). And this acknowledgment has not included them in the religion of Islam because of their shirk (in worshiping Him) by worshiping statues and idols (besides worshiping Allah) and also because they do not want to believe in the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam." (see Syarah 'Aqidah Ath-Thahawiyah, pp. 18-19. cet Darul 'Aqidah)
Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih Al-'Utsaimin Rahimahullah was once asked, "What is the polytheism committed by the polytheists that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam sent among them?"
So, he replied, "When viewed from the side of the polytheists who the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam sent among them, then in fact their location of shirk is not in terms of rububiyah. Because Al-Qur'an Al-Karim shows evidence that they are people who associate partners with Allah in terms of worship only. As for rububiyah, they believe that Allah is the only Rabb (Creator and Sustainer). They also believe that it is Allah who can answer the prayers of people who are in a pinch. They also believe that it is Allah who is able to reveal various evils and dangers, and they also admit other things. As Allah has mentioned about them, that is their recognition of the oneness of the rububiyah of Allah 'Azza Wajalla. However, they are people who associate partners with Allah in worship, that is they worship other gods besides worshiping Allah. And this is shirk that expels the perpetrator from religion.” (Fatawa Arkanil Islam, p. 18)
